He is a doctor of social sciences in economics and finance. He graduated from the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw, specializing in environmental economics. Earlier he had completed his master's studies in economics at the Wrocław University of Economics and in environmental protection at the University of Wrocław. He has been working at the UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre since 2020. In his work he focuses on the assessment and valuation of ecosystem services.

Zbigniew Szkop has gained his professional experience in the assessment and valuation of ecosystem services working at his home faculty and during his research stays abroad: at the Technical University of Berlin, the Technical University of Dresden, the University of Glasgow and the United States Forest Service. Furthermore, he worked for several years at the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC).
